About Us

Some things just take off. A song you can’t escape on the bus, a gadget your cousin suddenly won’t stop talking about, a phrase nobody used last week that now seems to be everywhere. Most of the time we scroll past without asking how it happened, or why it happened to that thing and not the one sitting right beside it.

Popular Magazine is where we ask.

What we’re about

We’re an independent online magazine from the UK, and we write about whatever people are talking about. The headline is usually the least interesting part of a story. What we go after is the bit underneath: who started it, why it caught on, what it says about the rest of us, and whether anyone will still care next month.

The name is a little cheeky. Popular doesn’t have to mean shallow, and we’d like to prove it, one story at a time.

What you’ll find here

Our corner of the internet covers culture, lifestyle, entertainment and technology, along with the odd piece about everyday life that doesn’t fit neatly anywhere else. Some stories will explain a trend. Some will look back at something everyone has forgotten about. Some will simply be good reading for ten minutes when you’d rather not be doing anything useful.

We don’t chase every passing buzzword. If something is loud for a day and gone by Friday, you won’t find us breathlessly covering it. We’d rather wait, watch, and write about it properly once we know what we’re actually looking at.

How we work

We write like people, for people. That means plain words, short paragraphs and no stretching a thin idea to fill the page. If a story needs four paragraphs, it gets four. If it needs forty, we’ll try to make every one of them earn its place.

We check things before we publish them. When we get something wrong, we fix it and say so, rather than quietly editing and hoping nobody noticed. We’d rather be trusted than look perfect.

And when we recommend something, whether it’s a film, a product or a place, it’s because we think it’s worth your time. Our opinions are ours, and we’ll tell you when they are opinions.

What we won’t do

We won’t fill your screen with clickbait headlines that promise a revelation and deliver a shrug. We won’t bury the answer under six paragraphs of preamble. And we won’t pretend to know more than we do. If we’re unsure about something, we’ll say that too.

Who it’s for

Curious people, mostly. Readers who like knowing why things are the way they are, who would rather get a straight answer than a sales pitch, and who don’t mind a bit of personality in what they read. You don’t need to be an expert in anything. You just need to be the sort of person who sees something everyone is talking about and thinks, hang on, why is that?

Say hello

We’re still young, and this site will keep changing shape as we learn what you actually want to read. If you’ve spotted a story we’re missing, found a mistake, or just have an opinion, use the Contact page. Real people read what comes in, and good ideas have a way of turning into articles.

Thanks for stopping by. Stay a while.
